BYD is shifting its focus from affordable electric vehicles to the premium segment. The Chinese company unveiled its flagship SUV, the Great Tang, which, even before its official launch, has garnered over 150,000 pre-orders—a record for a single model from the automaker.

The BYD Great Tang, known in China as the Datang, debuted in April at the Beijing Auto Show, where it became the biggest event. The automaker received 30,000 pre-orders within the first 24 hours; in less than two weeks, that number surpassed 100,000; it now stands at over 150,000, a company record. The SUV boasts “29 global firsts,” according to BYD, including a colossal 950 km range and China’s first seven-seat “2+2+3” configuration.

The cabin features three large screens: one for the driver, one for the infotainment system, and one for the passenger—they occupy the entire dashboard. Rear-seat passengers are treated to another large screen that lowers from the ceiling. The front and second-row captain’s-style seats feature a zero-gravity effect, heating, ventilation, and massage functions. A refrigerator and folding tables are also included. For a smooth and comfortable ride, the BYD Disus-A intelligent control system and dual-chamber air suspension are included.

The base Premium EV version, with a 105.79 kWh battery and a range of 800 km, starts at 239,900 yuan ($35,500). The top-of-the-line Flagship EV, with a 130.15 kWh battery and a range of up to 950 km, starts at 269,900 yuan ($40,000).
