Sony Pictures and Game Kitchen have officially acquired the film rights to the indie adventure game The Drifter, Deadline reports. The game itself was released in 2025 by Australian studio Powerhoof, while Game Kitchen is known for its work on the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise.
The plot revolves around wandering vagabond Mick Carter, who witnesses a brutal murder. Soldiers in futuristic armor pursue the traveler, throw him into a reservoir, and drown him. However, the story doesn’t end there.
Dead, Mick awakens moments before his own death. Accused of the murder he witnessed and tormented by his own past, the hero is plunged into a maddening web of intrigue and conspiracy.
Several producers, including executive producers, have already been attached to the project. It’s also reported that “highly influential writers and directors” have expressed interest in adapting The Drifter and have begun approaching film companies to pitch their ideas for the future film.
