Valve engineer Pierre-Loup Griffe gave an interview to IGN, during which he made several rather curious statements.

Among other things, he shared new information about the status of the Steam Deck 2 portable console. The specialist stated that Valve continues to work hard on the device, but is not yet ready to reveal details about the release date.

The original Steam Deck launched in February 2022; an OLED version followed in November 2023, which, in addition to an updated display, received a more power-efficient processor and optimized thermal management, though the chip architecture remained the same. Valve already has a vision for the next-generation portable console: last year, Valve software engineer Pierre-Loup Griffais stated that it would be a breakthrough on all fronts—a 20%, 30%, or even 50% increase in frame rates in games alone wouldn’t be enough if battery life remained the same. But work on the device is already in full swing.

We’re working hard on it. And obviously, at every stage, if you look at the hardware designs over the years, you can draw a direct line from the original Steam Controller and Steam Machine to the Steam Deck, to everything we’re announcing and releasing this year. And we expect Steam Deck 2 to be similar, and a lot of what we’re doing now will be a result of that experience,” Mr. Griffe said in an interview with IGN.

In addition, a Valve representative said the company is making every effort to combat the shortage of the basic Steam Deck caused by the crisis in the memory market.
