Encrypted Chats in Facebook Messenger Now Include More Expected Features

Chats will be gradually upgraded over the next few months, adding the end-to-end encryption feature, according to the company. The company will notify users in individual chat threads when the security feature is enabled, while emphasizing that the process of selecting and updating chats to support E2EE is random.

Meta has announced that Messenger users may soon receive notifications that the service is being upgraded to facilitate end-to-end encryption for all messages. CEO Mark Zuckerberg first posted a brief post about it on his Facebook page, also mentioning that link previews, custom emojis, and new themes will be added soon.

About how this service will work, the company said in August last year. This change will essentially make E2E end-to-end encryption the default, notifying users with the message “Messenger has secured this chat with end-to-end encryption.” A small padlock icon will appear in the program’s chat list next to chats that are now E2E encrypted. Users have no choice but to accept the new position, but the company has promised that this will not affect users’ ability to view message history or report issues.
