Apple Says Lower Core Count In iPad Air 2024 Won’t Impact Performance
Apple said that although it has adjusted the number of cores in the iPad Air 2024, previously provided performance information is correct.
“We are updating Apple.com to correct the core count for the M2 iPad Air. All performance claims for the M2 iPad Air are accurate and based on the 9-core GPU.” —Apple
Of course, the iPad Air 11 2024 and iPad Air 13 2024 with M2 chipsets are noticeably faster than their M1-based 2022 predecessor. The company now claims that the “Apple-designed M2 has a 15 percent faster processor, 25 percent faster graphics, and 50 percent more memory bandwidth than the previous generation.”
Apple initially provided performance comparisons between the 2022 iPad Air based on the Apple M1 chipset with an 8-core GPU and the new devices based on the M2 chipset with a 10-core GPU. Then the company promised a 35 percent acceleration of the graphics subsystem, although now it is only talking about a 25 percent increase in graphics performance.
That is, what Apple promised in promotional materials initially concerned a version with 9 GPU cores, so buyers of the new iPad Air will receive exactly what Apple described during the announcement.
