Amazon-owned Zoox unveiled an upgraded version of its signature robotaxi, designed specifically for commercial passenger transportation. According to the developers, the current version is the final pre-production version.

The basic features of the Zoox robotaxi remain unchanged. This electric, autonomous, cubic vehicle has no steering wheel or other controls. Designed to carry four people at speeds of up to 120 km/h, the robotaxi relies on 40 built-in cameras, radars, lidars, and infrared sensors. The electric vehicle can move equally in both directions, and all four wheels can turn, providing high maneuverability.

The robotaxi retains its sunroof and starry sky lighting. Zoox has made a number of design and construction changes necessary for a robotaxi capable of carrying thousands of passengers. The interior now features more soft upholstery and additional ergonomic features, while the materials and finishes have been given a lighter palette. Zoox hopes this creates a “calmer atmosphere” and provides a contrasting background, making it easier for passengers to find items, such as smartphones. The attachment of gadgets to the charging pad has been improved, the cup holders have been enlarged, and the touch screen has become larger and more visible.

Zoox has repositioned the reflective elements on the robotaxi’s body for improved visibility and added a new speaker and microphone to the door interface. Two-way audio will improve communication with passengers and other road users, as well as between Zoox support and emergency services.

Full-scale electric vehicle assembly is planned to begin at a plant in Hayward, California, where, subject to regulatory approval, production rates will reach 100 vehicles per week. The first updated self-driving vehicles are expected to hit the roads in commercial fleets by the end of this year.
