Tesla Robotaxi To Be Called Cybercab
At Tesla’s Q1 earnings call on Tuesday, Elon Musk mentioned a future self-driving car.
This was mentioned at the very beginning of the event: “As we announced, we will be demonstrating a purpose-built robotic taxi, or Cybercab, in August.” The presentation is scheduled for August 8th, but this does not mean that the production car will begin production in the near future. The Cybertruck electric pickup truck took five long years to reach the assembly line, preparations for the launch of the small-scale assembly of the Tesla Semi truck took the same amount of time, and the second-generation Roadster sports car is still waiting its turn since 2017.
Based on what we know about the design of Tesla’s self-driving taxi, the name seems reasonable. Elon Musk’s biographer Walter Isaacson said last year that Tesla’s self-driving taxis will be similar to the Cybertruck. He claims Musk saw a prototype of a self-driving taxi and said, “When one of these cars turns the corner, people feel like they’re seeing the future.”
