Meta and EssilorLuxottica are preparing to launch new Ray-Ban AI eyewear models, the RayBan Meta Scriber and RayBan Meta Blazer, according to recently published documents with the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC).
The new products are not part of the new generation of Meta smart glasses. They will be available in rectangular and curved versions and will presumably be sold primarily through traditional prescription eyewear sales channels, sources told Bloomberg.
Vision-correcting versions of the glasses, codenamed Scriber and Blazer, were previously spotted by The Verge in Federal Communications Commission (FCC) filings.
Plans to expand the offering of prescription glasses were hinted at earlier this year by CEO Mark Zuckerberg during a fiscal year-end conference call. He noted that “billions of people wear glasses or contact lenses for vision correction,” adding that “it’s hard to imagine a world in a few years where most of the glasses people wear aren’t AI-powered glasses.”
The premiere is planned for the near future, taking into account the experience of the second generation of successful glasses, which was released at the end of 2023, a month after certification.
Meta is transitioning its AI glasses from an experimental stage to a mainstream product, increasing investment in the category and reducing its focus on VR projects, reflecting a shift in the company’s technology strategy for the coming years.
