GM’s Cruise Announces Major Expansion In Texas
General Motors’ (GM) robotic taxi division Cruise has announced that it will expand to two Texas metropolitan areas in the coming weeks.
After announcing the removal of time and space restrictions in San Francisco and expansion in Phoenix, Arizona and Austin, Texas, Cruise is now eyeing other Texas cities. The company has announced the deployment of its self-driving vehicles in Houston and Dallas, in a controlled form with a driver behind the wheel. Houston will be the first city to start testing self-driving cars, followed shortly by Dallas.
The service expansion announcement was made this morning by Cruise’s CEO on Twitter, indicating that Dallas and Houston will be getting robotic taxi services in the coming weeks. Though it should be noted that due to regulatory hurdles, robot taxis currently require human operators to supervise driving until Cruise obtains a proper license.
With GM expanding the Cruise workspace, it helps the autonomous vehicle wing operate profitably and increases the number of testing environments it has access to. Cruise has long been a leading autonomous technology incubator for General, and with these service extensions, it will be able to make more breakthroughs than ever.
