Microsoft has released optional update KB5083631 for Windows 11. It brings 34 changes, from a new Xbox mode to security and performance improvements. The update is already available for installation, but is in testing status until the next Patch Tuesday.

The update, released on April 30 outside the security patch schedule, includes numerous fixes, primarily affecting Windows Explorer (explorer.exe). Applications launch faster at system startup, and the performance of working with large data sets has been improved. Changes have also been made to Windows Hello, the Microsoft Store, and the taskbar system tray.

These system changes are a response to Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella’s statements about “bringing back the fans.” Previously, Windows product manager Pavan Davuluri also acknowledged the need to speed up the system and reduce the use of artificial intelligence. Specifically, the company has begun reducing the presence of Copilot in apps such as Snipping Tool, Photos, Widgets, and Notepad. However, AI remains in the system: the taskbar now features the ability to display progress of AI agents for both third-party and native apps.

You can install the update manually through Windows Update by clicking “Check for updates” and selecting “Download and install.” Since this is an optional update, it is not installed automatically.
