Sony Froze Sales Of CFexpress & SD Memory Cards Due To A Flash Memory Shortage

Sony temporarily suspended new orders for certain digital photo and video memory cards in Japan. The company announced this on March 27, citing a global shortage of memory chips as the reason for its decision.

Sony explained that the decision was made due to the ongoing flash memory shortage and “other factors,” which may include a helium shortage due to the war in Iran, which has also begun to impact chip production. This applies to orders from both authorized dealers and consumers for the “foreseeable future.”

“Due to the global semiconductor (memory) shortage and other factors, the supply of CFexpress and SD memory cards is expected to be unable to meet demand for the foreseeable future. Therefore, we have decided to temporarily suspend orders from our authorized dealers and from customers in Sony stores, effective March 27, 2026. Regarding resuming orders, we will review the matter while monitoring the supply situation and will announce it separately on the product information page,” according to the Sony Japan website.

Sony did not specify a timeline for resuming order acceptance. The company stated that it will monitor the supply situation and will separately announce further decisions on the relevant product pages.
