Musk Sues OpenAI For Refusing To Work “For The Good Of Humanity” For The Sake Of Profit

The head of SpaceX and Tesla, as well as the owner of the social network X, Elon Musk, filed a lawsuit against the company OpenAI and its CEO Sam Altman, claiming that they violated the agreement on the non-profit nature of the activities. OpenAI’s shift in focus toward commercial interests, especially with tech giant Microsoft, Musk argues, runs counter to the company’s original mission of developing artificial intelligence for the benefit of humanity.

The lawsuit alleges breach of contract. Musk says Altman and fellow co-founder Greg Brockman first approached him to create an open-source, nonprofit company that would work on artificial general intelligence (AGI) “for the benefit of humanity.” However, now she is allegedly “focused on making money.”

Note that Musk became one of the founders in 2015; he resigned in 2018, but remained a donor.

The abandonment of the original mission, according to Musk, was due to the company’s close relationship with Microsoft.

“Until now, the OpenAI Inc. website  continues to maintain that its charter is intended to ensure that AGI benefits all humanity.  However, in fact, OpenAI Inc. has become a de facto closed-source subsidiary of the largest technology company in the world, Microsoft,” the lawsuit states.

Musk expresses concern about the potential threats associated with the uncontrolled development of AI in the hands of a commercial organization.
