Meta, which had previously intended to release its new artificial intelligence model, Avocado, in March, has decided to postpone this event until at least May, the New York Times (NYT) reported, citing its own sources.
Meta has invested billions of dollars in artificial intelligence development, including building data centers and attracting leading specialists. By 2026, the company plans to spend up to $135 billion on infrastructure, almost double last year’s spending.
To accelerate progress, the company created TBD Lab, led by Alexander Wang, who was appointed Chief Artificial Intelligence Officer after a major investment in the startup Scale AI. TBD Lab is working on two new models: Avocado (text) and Mango (image and video generation).
The company is debating whether to make Avocado an open or closed model. Meta has traditionally supported open source, but some management is concerned about security and commercial risks.
Meta’s AI development team is also reported to have discussed temporarily licensing Gemini to power the company’s AI products, although a final decision has not yet been made. Meta’s work on a text-based AI model, codenamed Avocado, was revealed late last year.
