Intel To Make Chips For Taiwan’s MediaTek
The American company Intel will produce chips for the Taiwanese developer of processors MediaTek. It is likely that Intel will introduce MediaTek as the main client for Intel Foundry Services, demonstrating a business reboot. This will allow the American manufacturer to compete more successfully with TSMC and Samsung.
MediaTek is essentially a factoryless chipmaker that supplies processors for smartphones from OnePlus, Samsung and other manufacturers, with most of its capacity currently handled by TSMC. It appears that Intel plans to build chips for less attractive devices used for industrial computing, medical devices, and more.
This partnership is in line with Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger’s promise to seek customers for his foundry business. Intel launched IFS in 2021 to capitalize on the growing demand for semiconductor manufacturing by offering “advanced processing and packaging technologies” as well as increasing capacity worldwide. As one of the leading factoryless chip manufacturers, MediaTek will be a key customer.
