3D Printed Biomaterial House Coming To US

On November 21, 2022, the world’s first BioHome3D house, printed on a 3D printer, made entirely of materials based on biological raw materials, was presented in the USA

This development belongs to the Center for Advanced Structures and Composites of the University of Maine (ASCC), USA. This project is supported by the Maine Housing Authority and the US Department of Energy’s Hub and Spoke Program, UMaine and Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

The 56 m³ prototype house is designed to help tackle the affordable housing crisis. It has 3D printed floors, walls and roof. The insulation of the walls and roof is made from wood, even the floor tiles are made from recycled materials. The house is protected from bad weather and insects.

3D printing of houses helps to solve the problems associated with a shortage of labor.  Using local wood in the printing process solves supply chain problems. The precision of the printing process almost eliminates construction waste. Using advanced manufacturing processes developed by UMaine, low-income homes of the future can be customized to suit affordability, efficiency and aesthetic preferences.
