Apple plans to unveil its long-awaited smart home hub, dubbed HomePad, as early as October 13; Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman reported this, adding that the device will launch alongside the new HomePod mini speaker and an updated version of the Apple TV.

All three new products will feature integration with the updated, AI-powered Apple Siri. The centerpiece of the presentation will be a smart home control hub—a fundamentally new product category for the company. The device will feature a 6-inch display and can be either wall-mounted or placed on a flat surface. The display’s thickness will be comparable to that of an iPhone, while the bezels surrounding the screen will resemble those of older iPad models.

Based on descriptions, the smart home hub’s design will recall the Apple iMac G4: it will feature a round metal base housing the speakers and microphones, along with a metal arm supporting the screen that allows for tilt adjustment. Apple is also expected to release a wall-mount version with a slimmer base for the speakers and microphones.

The device—tentatively dubbed the Apple HomePad—will be powered via a USB-C port, as the smart display will not include a built-in battery. It will be available in Apple’s signature silver aluminum finish. The software platform will offer deep integration with Siri AI and iPad-style apps; the Messages app interface, for instance, will be split into two panels. The smart display will control smart home devices, support video calls and music playback, and display photo slideshows; it will also include intercom functionality as well as facial and voice recognition for user identification.

The launch is taking place under the company’s new head, John Ternus. According to Bloomberg, Apple is also preparing a larger HomePod, a home security camera with a sensor, and a premium hub featuring a nine-inch screen mounted on a robotic, movable arm. Prices for the new products have not yet been announced.
