disc drives for the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition and PS5 Pro consoles. The official PlayStation Direct store now has a “one disc drive per order” policy, which the company attributes to high demand for the accessory.

The $79 accessory is designed for the PS5 Digital Edition and PS5 Pro consoles. It allows you to play supported PS5 and PS4 games from Blu-ray discs, and also supports playback of 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, and DVD movies.

The decision to limit sales of the device follows Sony’s recent confirmation that it will cease production of physical discs for new PlayStation games starting in January 2028. After that, new PlayStation games will be sold digitally only through the PlayStation Store and retail stores.

Sony states that games already released on disc or games released before January 2028 will not be affected by this decision. The PS Direct page for the disc drive now also states that discs for games released before January 2028 can continue to be used on supported consoles.

The PS5 Pro, like the PS5 Digital Edition, does not come with a disc drive. Sony sells a disc drive separately for users who want to play physical games or use their consoles as Blu-ray players. The company also reminds that pairing the disc drive with the PS5 console during setup requires an internet connection.

The decision sparked a backlash in the gaming community, which likely contributed to the sharp rise in demand for the accessory.
