Colin Angle, creator of the Roomba robot vacuum cleaner and the man responsible for bringing 50 million household robots into homes, unveiled the first robot from his new company, Familiar Machines & Magic, this week. The dog-sized, four-legged device isn’t designed for cleaning, but rather for emotional connection with its owner: it runs on a local generative AI model and is designed to develop its own “personality.”
The idea is fundamentally different from Roomba. Familiar doesn’t clean—it communicates. The robot is powered by a local generative AI model, which is designed to gradually develop the device’s “personality” based on interactions with a specific owner. Engle calls this a “physically embodied AI system” and sees applications in companionship, elder care, parent-child support, and smart home systems.

The robot was named Familiar, a reference to the folkloric image of a supernatural companion. The device resembles a cross between a bear, a barn owl, and a golden retriever. It has an expressive face with movable eyebrows, ears, and eyes.
The local model is not a random choice. This means that data about interactions with the robot remains on the device, not in the cloud. Pricing and release date have not yet been announced. Details are available on the company’s website.
