Meta, Microsoft And Other Tech Businesses Formed The Metaverse Standards Forum To Develop Standards For The Metaverse

Tech giants Meta, Microsoft, Epic Games, and 33 other tech companies have formed a group to standardize metaverse technologies. The so-called Metaverse Standards Forum is designed to strengthen open, interoperable standards for augmented and virtual reality systems and 3D technologies.

According to a joint press release from the companies, the group will focus on “pragmatic, actionable projects” like hackathons and prototyping tools to support common standards. In addition, participants are interested in developing an agreed terminology – while many market participants cannot even agree on a common definition of the term “metaverse”. In addition to the companies already mentioned, the founding members of the group include well-known market players such as the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), NVIDIA, Qualcomm, Sony Interactive Entertainment and Unity, as well as a number of smaller companies and entities.

At the same time, the most important industry players such as Apple, which is actively working on AR and VR technologies, as well as well-known developers of solutions for games and virtual worlds, Niantic and Roblox, do not participate in the group. It is possible that new members will appear after the group begins to operate – the first meetings of industry representatives should take place before the end of this year.

The creation of the forum indicates an interest in the “formalization” of developments for the metaverse as a single information field. Just recently, Meta representatives demonstrated numerous samples of the new generation of VR headsets.
