Boston Dynamics Atlas Humanoid Robot Learns to Sort Auto Parts on Its Own
Boston Dynamics’ humanoid robot Atlas has made significant progress in its skills. The robot previously showed itself to be a good athlete, doing push-ups. Atlas is now “working” in a car factory warehouse.
The video report shows how the robot manages to deftly and quickly move engine parts between containers. Moreover, the manufacturer claims that Atlas operates completely autonomously, without “prescribed or remotely controlled movements.”
According to Boston Dynamics, “the robot is able to detect and respond to changes in the environment (e.g. moving fixtures) and action failures (e.g. failing to insert a lid, tripping, colliding with the environment) using a combination of vision, force, and proprioceptive sensors.”
In addition to autonomous tasks, the video shows off the impressive adaptive (and robust) actuators that allow the robot to pivot around its waist. This action minimizes unnecessary movement, saving precious seconds.
