American Airlines Buys 20 Boom Supersonic Jets
In an effort to halve travel time overseas, American Airlines signed an agreement with Boom Supersonic to purchase 20 of its own-design Overture aircraft, with an option to purchase 40 more aircraft over time.
Boom announced earlier in the year that it would build a manufacturing facility at the Piedmont Triad International Airport in North Carolina. The company expects to start building its Overture Superfactory later this year, with production starting in 2024, though the plant’s first built aircraft won’t take off until sometime in 2026.
The company expects the Mach 1.7 jet to fly between Newark, USA, and London in less than four hours, and the San Francisco-Tokyo flight in about six hours. Boom also claims that the Overture will be a “zero carbon” aircraft due to its ability to fly on 100% sustainable jet fuel.
