DeepSeek plans to significantly increase prices for its AI services, an unusual move for the Chinese player.
Until now, DeepSeek’s current pricing policy has been considered a reliable defense against competitors, as they cannot offer access to AI models with comparable performance at such low prices. However, the entire global AI industry is now characterized by a focus on profitability, as multi-billion dollar investments must be recouped, and offering access to AI models at a pittance is impossible to achieve within a reasonable timeframe. DeepSeek plans to go public this year, so investors need to demonstrate the company’s ability to make money.
The exact amount of the change was not specified, but current prices suggest a significant discount compared to competitors. DeepSeek charges clients $0.14 per million incoming tokens and $0.28 per million outgoing tokens. By comparison, Moonshot Al charges $3 per million incoming tokens and $5 per million outgoing tokens. American-based Anthropic charges even higher:$10 and $50, respectively.
DeepSeek’s decision to raise prices could mark a turning point in the Chinese AI market, where other leading players have followed suit, offering low-cost, open-source services. Startups and their investors are seeking a way to transition from the era of ultra-low-cost AI services to more commercially viable business models.
