LG Unveils 20% Stretchable Display

LG Display has unveiled the world’s first 12-inch high resolution stretchable display. The company said the thin and light design offers next-level versatility for a variety of everyday scenarios. For example, the panel can be easily attached to curved surfaces such as leather, furniture, clothing, aircraft and car control panels.  However, it may be some time before something like this becomes commercially available.

LG Disply has been working on a stretchable display since 2020, when flexible and rollable screens began to come into fashion. However, she is not alone in this, and a number of companies, including Samsung and Sony, have also worked and are working on flexible and stretchable displays. By the way, LG calls such screens “free-form displays”, because they can really take on an arbitrary shape.

To make the screen stretchable, a silicon substrate material, similar to that used to make contact lenses, made it possible. Light sources, pixels and subpixels, are the smallest LEDs less than 40 microns in size. This simultaneously gave both durability and high resolution. Finally, the electronic circuits within the display are designed in the form of springs to allow the display to bend, fold, and stretch without stopping.
