IKEA Enters The Self-Driving Truck Market
Kodiak Robotics, this week, announced the success of IKEA’s cargo transportation experiment in Texas on a route of almost 470 km without driver intervention.
There are operators on board the trucks capable of taking control in the event of a dangerous situation, but the trips are carried out autonomously.
Every day, a robotic tractor-trailer travels about 300 miles between an Ikea warehouse near Houston and a store in suburban Dallas.
“The introduction of autonomous transportation technology can improve the quality of life of drivers by focusing on the local driver work that most prefer to do. Together with IKEA, we can improve safety, improve the working conditions of drivers and create a more sustainable trucking system,” said Burnett, noting that the startup does not aim to replace human drivers.
