Italian carmaker Lamborghini has abandoned plans to launch an all-electric model due to the project’s high cost and low consumer interest, the supercar maker’s CEO, Stephan Winkelmann, announced in an interview with The Sunday Times.

This decision was made after more than a year of continuous internal discussions, interaction with customers and dealers, and market and global data analysis,” he said.

He admitted that Lamborghini’s potential customer base shows “nearly zero” interest in purely electric sports cars. For this reason, the company decided to abandon the idea of producing such a car, called the Lanzador, at the end of last year. According to Lamborghini’s CEO, electric cars don’t create the same emotional connection with the owner that is typical of combustion-powered supercars. The latter’s noise plays a significant role in this segment.

Instead, Winkelmann said, Lamborghini will shift its focus to developing plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs). According to the article, all Lamborghini models will be equipped with such hybrid systems by 2030. Winkelmann also promised to continue producing internal combustion engines “for as long as possible.”
