For six years, Masimo has been challenging Apple’s use of blood oxygen detection technology, which it claims was incorporated into its Watch smartwatches in violation of its patents. This week, a US court ruled in favor of Masimo in its dispute with Apple over one of several patents under litigation.

An Apple spokesperson stated that the company disagrees with the court’s decision and intends to appeal. He noted that Masimo has filed more than 25 patent lawsuits against Apple over the past six years, most of which were invalidated. Furthermore, the patent at issue in this case expired in 2022 and covers outdated technology.

Masimo, for its part, called the verdict “an important victory in protecting our innovation and intellectual property.”

The lawsuit is part of a broader patent battle between Apple and Masimo, which includes allegations of employee poaching and technology theft.

In 2023, Apple was forced to stop importing the Watch Series 9 and Ultra 2 watches into the US due to a dispute with Masimo, as the International Trade Commission tribunal sided with the company.
