OpenAI’s ChatGPT mobile app has earned $2 billion since its launch in May 2023, generating an average of $2.91 per install. The bulk of the growth came in 2025, with revenue in the first seven months amounting to $1.35 billion, up 673% from the same period in 2024.
According to Appfigures, cited by TechCrunch, ChatGPT brings in about $193 million monthly, while its closest competitor Grok from xAI generates $3.6 million, which is only 1.9% of ChatGPT’s figures. In terms of per-install revenue, ChatGPT’s average revenue exceeds $2.9, compared to $0.75 for Grok and $0.28 for Copilot, which is powered by OpenAI language models.
The key markets for the app were the US (38% of revenue) and Germany (5.3%), with the largest number of installs coming from India (13.7%), where most people apparently use the free plan. ChatGPT’s total installs reached 690 million, while Grok’s was 39.5 million.
Grok was initially lagging behind in the mobile segment and did not have a separate iOS app until January 2025, and an Android version only appeared in March.
