Zuckerberg Reveals Upcoming VR Keyboard For Quest
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg posted a video on his Instagram page showing off new virtual reality (VR) technology that can turn any flat surface into a virtual keyboard. The technology is being developed by Meta’s VR-focused Reality Labs division and has the potential to change the way we interact with digital devices.
In the video, Mr. Zuckerberg and Andrew Bosworth put on the Quest 2, and the image from the device, a virtual contour projection of a QWERTY keyboard, is displayed on the screen next to them. Top managers tap their fingers on the table, and the headset tracks their movements, and blue-colored virtual copies of the hands enter the text. The head of the company managed to accelerate to a speed of 100 words per minute, and the technical director took all 119. The average typist, by comparison, produces only 40 words per minute.
There is no talk of any holographic projection on the surface in the real world – only the user of the Quest headset sees the virtual keyboard. The system recreates the user’s environment in low quality, but this is enough for the function to work properly. The app is still in development, and its public release will probably take some time – by then it will probably look more attractive. It is worth noting that the idea of projecting the keyboard onto a horizontal surface seems to be more productive than entering text using a virtual keyboard that floats in the air – hands get tired of it quickly.
