Tesla to Start Production of Six-Seater Model Y in 2025
Tesla plans to start producing a six-seat version of its Model Y car in China from 2025, as the US automaker seeks to boost the appeal of its best-selling but aging electric vehicle
Tesla has told suppliers to prepare for a double-digit increase in Model Y production at its Shanghai plant, one of the sources said. The company is currently awaiting government approval to expand the plant by 70 hectares on former farmland.
Tesla was previously reported to be planning to release a new five-seat version of the 2020 Model Y called Project Juniper this year, but a Reuters source claims the launch has been pushed back to early next year.
The addition of a six-seat version highlights growing pressure from Chinese rivals, while in the US Tesla is focusing on autonomous driving technology and robotaxis.
