Winamp Revival Includes Platforms For Musicians And Fans
Winamp’s plans to get back on track involve much more than a final audio software update.
The company has launched an invitation to a creator service that provides musicians with the tools to distribute, promote and benefit from their work.
Most of the details are not clear until the features are available in September, and fan subscription support will debut in November. A favorite artist can offer special content at different levels.
The app has a limit of 25,000 people. They get free access to the tools for a year and the Creator Pass, which provides “exclusive benefits” including digital tokens.
The Creator service and improved software can help Winamp adapt to an era where streaming and subscription have largely replaced downloads. However, many listeners are stuck with their own streaming apps like Apple Music and Spotify. It is not certain that they will turn to third party software and services, even if they may miss out on rewards.
