Volkswagen Ends The ID.4 Era: ID Electric Crossover Unveiled

Volkswagen has unveiled the new electric crossover ID. Tiguan, which will replace the ID.4 and ID.5 models.
Volkswagen was among the first to utilize flexible platforms to create a wide range of models across various classes and body styles based on shared components, a strategy it has maintained in the electric vehicle segment. The ID. Tiguan is underpinned by an upgraded version of the mass-market MEB+ electric vehicle platform. The vehicle is available with battery capacities of 58 kWh or 77 kWh. The former option comes exclusively with a 187 hp (140 kW) rear electric motor, while the latter offers a choice between rear-wheel drive (281 hp / 210 kW) and all-wheel drive (295 hp / 220 kW). Its range under the European WLTP cycle is up to 600 km.

The Volkswagen ID. Tiguan features a traditional look aligned with the new “Pure Positive” design language. The company aimed to give the ID. Tiguan the look and feel of a premium vehicle rather than a mass-market model, both inside and out. Conventional door handles have returned, a move prompted by the requirements of Chinese regulators.
The vehicle is notable for its abundance of physical controls, including steering wheel buttons, switches for climate control and windows, and traditional air vents instead of electronically controlled systems.

The cabin features a new 15-inch multimedia screen, with an optional 12-inch display available for the front passenger. One of the display options for the 10-inch digital instrument cluster is particularly interesting: a retro-style layout. Instead of the standard modern design, the gauges and indicators can mimic those of classic models—such as the first- or fourth-generation Golf, the second-generation Golf Country, the first-generation Tiguan, the rally-spec Touareg, or the Beetle. Regarding the latter, it is unclear whether the design refers to the original classic model or the version revived in the 1990s.

Orders in Europe will open on October 13, with prices starting at €42,695. Volkswagen previously decided to recall 22,500 ID.4 electric vehicles due to a fire risk.
