The Pentagon Received Its Own Versions Of ChatGPT And Grok

The Pentagon has launched special versions of ChatGPT and Grok for US Department of Defense employees. Approximately 3 million people, both military and civilian, will have access to these military AI tools.
The primary adaptation of all three solutions was to ensure the processing of sensitive US military data within a secure infrastructure. The “military” version of Google Gemini lost the right to collect data at its own discretion, which is effectively provided for in the “civilian” version. To date, the GenAI.mil portal has attracted 1.7 million Pentagon employees, which, given the Pentagon’s overall workforce of 3 million, is a remarkable result, considering the system’s short lifespan.
The list of generative AI developers involved does not include Anthropic for obvious reasons: since late February, this startup has been included on the list of companies posing a threat to US national security. The startup recently successfully challenged the Pentagon’s decision in a California court, but for full exoneration, a similar verdict must be rendered in Washington. Until that is done, the Pentagon and its contractors are nominally prohibited from using Anthropic’s developments.
ChatGPT Mil is based on the OpenAI for Government program and will be similar in functionality to the familiar ChatGPT. Users will be able to work with chats, files, projects, and create their own GPT models.
Grok for Government has a more military-oriented approach. The agency stated that the model will help speed up task completion, improve knowledge sharing, and make interdepartmental collaboration more secure.
