The “Glass” iPhone: To Be Or Not To be?

The recent revelation that Apple intends to scrap the release of a commemorative iPhone model with glass backs couldn’t help but spark the interest of Mark Gurman, who is renowned for his intimate knowledge of the company’s plans. Speaking to Bloomberg, he stated that Apple still intends to release a corresponding smartphone next year.

Rumors of an all-glass iPhone have been circulating online for over a year. Previous reports suggested this could be the most significant design update for Apple smartphones since the iPhone X. The device was supposed to feature a curved glass panel spanning the front and back of the device, integrated Face ID, and solid-state buttons. Edison Lee estimates that if this device were unveiled in 2027, its average retail price would be around $2,060.

However, insider Mark Gurman disagrees with Lee. He claims that Apple still plans to release a glass iPhone next year.

However, the final version of the device may differ from what was initially envisioned:

— A bolder design, promoted by Apple’s design studio, used even more glass instead of metal, but it was abandoned early on. This approach led to problems with the glass panels being joined together. According to sources, the design proved unviable when Apple had to decide on its mass production.

Next month, Apple is expected to unveil the

iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, as well as the foldable iPhone Ultra with a flexible display.

The former will feature improved cameras and a new red color, while the latter will mark the beginning of a new family of Apple smartphones.

The entry-level iPhone 18 and the even more affordable iPhone 18e will be released next spring. By then, the ultra-thin iPhone Air should also be updated, gaining a second camera and improved battery life. Camera-equipped AirPods and smart glasses are also expected to join Apple’s wearable portfolio.
