New iPhone SE To Get OLED
Apple has begun ordering additional OLED displays from BOE and LG Display.
Judging by the supply chain, these screens may be destined for the fourth-generation iPhone SE. Production of the smartphone is expected to start next month, with a release scheduled for early 2025.
Until about a decade ago, JDI and Sharp together supplied about 70% of the iPhone’s displays. However, in recent years, they have been solely suppliers of LCD panels for the affordable iPhone SE, as Apple has switched to OLED panels for all other smartphone models. South Korean and Chinese companies are the leading manufacturers and suppliers of OLED panels. Apple has begun placing orders for OLED panels for the upcoming iPhone SE with China’s BOE Technology Group and South Korea’s LG Display, according to multiple sources. The change marks the end of the LCD era in the iPhone.
OLED displays will surpass LCD in smartphone shipments for the first time this year, according to UK research firm Omdia. As the iPad and other products begin using improved OLED displays, Apple is expected to further reduce its purchases of LCD panels.
