Netflix Created Anime Using AI
Netflix set about conquering AI and presented the public with the first anime where all the backgrounds are drawn by Artificial Intelligence. The title is called Dog and Boy and tells about the fate of a boy and his robot dog. In addition to Netflix and AI rinna, WIT STUDIO also contributed to the creation of the short film.
In a tweet, Netflix Japan claimed that the short titled “Dog and The Boy” uses artificial intelligence-generated art in response to a labor shortage in the anime industry. The streaming platform noted:
«As an experimental attempt to help the labor-starved anime industry, we’ve used image generation technology for the background images of all three-minute video segments!»
The tweet sparked instant criticism and outrage from users who believe Netflix is using AI to avoid paying human artists. This has become a central issue since artificial intelligence for image generation began to be used last year, as many artists consider these tools unethical due to learning from masses of man-made art from the Internet and then replacing people to cut costs for companies. Netflix Japan’s assertion that artificial intelligence was being used to make up for a perceived workforce shortage has pushed the painful problem of the modern world with renewed vigor.
As the use of artificial intelligence becomes more commonplace, artists are rebelling against their craft being co-opted by algorithms.
