Bloomberg reports that Apple is developing two new Apple Pencil models: a basic version with USB-C and a Pro version.

According to Mark Gurman, the company is working to comply with new EU requirements requiring manufacturers to make device batteries easier to replace.

The first model, codenamed B582, is an updated version of the budget Apple Pencil, introduced a couple of years ago and charged via a USB-C port. The second model, codenamed B632, is an updated version of the Apple Pencil Pro, released in 2024 alongside the updated iPad Pro based on the M4 chip. To charge its battery, the stylus must be attached to the iPad’s magnetic mount.

Current Apple Pencil models are virtually impossible to repair or replace batteries if they fail, as the stylus is manufactured using adhesive to hold its components together.

According to Gurman, Apple’s engineers are developing new products with European Union requirements in mind regarding easier battery replacement in consumer electronics. This requires devices to comply with Article 11 of the EU Battery Regulation, which will come into force in the bloc on February 18, 2027.

Article 11 of the EU Battery Regulation, adopted in 2023, will enter into force in February 2027. The regulation requires batteries used in gadgets to be easily removable and replaceable. The regulation allows for some exceptions, but these do not apply to styluses.
