M2 Ultra Chip Announced at WWDC23 for Mac Studio and Mac Pro

Today at its traditional Worldwide Developers Conference WWDC, Apple announced its new M2 Ultra chip. According to the company, this is the largest and most powerful chip that Apple has ever created.

The chip consists of 134 billion transistors, which is 20 billion more than in the M1 Ultra.  Its unified architecture supports up to 192GB of memory, 50% more than the M1 Ultra, and delivers 800GB/s of memory bandwidth, double that of the M2 Max.

The M2 Ultra features a more powerful processor that is 20% faster than the M1 Ultra, a larger GPU that is up to 30% faster, and a Neural Engine that is up to 40% faster. The new media engine doubles the capabilities of the M2 Max and delivers ProRes acceleration.

The 24-core CPU of the M2 Ultra is composed of 16+8 next-generation cores, delivering 20% faster performance than the M1 Ultra.  So, on a Mac Studio with M2 Ultra, colorists using DaVinci Resolve will be able to process video 50% faster compared to M1 Ultra, Apple promises.

The GPU can have 60 or 76 new generation cores, which gives a performance increase of up to 30%.  Rendering 3D effects with Octane on Mac Studio with M2 Ultra will be up to three times faster than on M1 Ultra, Apple notes.

You can get the new M2 Ultra inside a Mac Studio or Mac Pro, with the latter offering PCIe expansion slots, a big win for commercial users who need high-quality cards for storage, encoding, and more.
