CES 2023: Sony And Honda Reveal First Afeela E-Car Concept
At CES 2023, Sony, in collaboration with Honda, showed its own Afeela electric car: a four-door liftback with 45 safety sensors, an external display, a panoramic roof and integration with Epic Games.
The company told when the car will go on sale and what is its advantage over competitors.
Afeela was shown a year after the merger of two Japanese companies into the car brand Sony Honda Mobility. The car is positioned as a safe electric car with a third-level autopilot, an advanced multimedia component and a powerful security system. The third level of autonomous driving means that the car can start and stop on its own in a traffic jam, but is not able to fully drive the car without the participation of the driver.
The Afeela electric sedan is equipped with 45 sensors, including cameras, radar and ultrasonic sensors. Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon said during the presentation that the new product is a “software-defined vehicle.”
“To realize intelligent mobility, continuous software updates and high-performance computing are needed,”said Yashuhide Mizuno. “To this end, we will work closely with Qualcomm.”
In turn, Amon noted that the software and hardware solution Snapdragon Digital Chassis, which is a set of platforms for designing cars, developing autonomous driving technologies, etc., will help in regular updates.
Epic Games CTO Kim Libreri said during the presentation that the company will partner with Sony Honda to “provide a connected car environment that paves the way not only for visual communication and safety, but also for entertainment.”
