Blue Origin Larned To Extract Breathable Oxygen From Lunar Soil

Jeff Bezos’s space company Blue Origin announced on the X network that it has successfully extracted breathable oxygen from simulant lunar dust for the first time. This was made possible by the Air Pioneer reactor, which Blue Origin has been developing for several years. This setup will provide lunar bases with a constant, on-site source of oxygen, providing life support for humans and fuel for rockets without relying on supplies from Earth.
A facility called Air Pioneer separates oxygen from minerals in lunar dust, much of which contains oxygen bound to metals such as iron and aluminum.
The process is based on electrolysis: lunar dust, melted at approximately 1,600 degrees Celsius, is subjected to an electric current, which releases oxygen ions and can be collected as a gas, while the metals are deposited separately.
Blue Origin claims the technology can provide oxygen for astronauts to breathe, as well as for the production of rocket fuel and building materials on the Moon. The system is described as compact and potentially suitable for space missions.
Blue Origin’s achievement brings humanity closer to realizing the concept of self-sufficient colonies on the Moon and, in the future, on Mars.
