Tecno Unveils A Concept of Very Thin Modular Smartphone

Despite its market position, Tecno is actively experimenting with the design and formats of its smartphones. Its latest experiment is a modular smartphone, which will be unveiled at MWC 2026.

The Tecno concept is based on the creation of a “modular smartphone ecosystem.” Unlike the bulky early prototypes showcased in the past, the Tecno prototype boasts a compact footprint—the base device is only 4.9 mm thick. Even with the 4.5 mm-thick external battery module installed, the device’s dimensions are roughly the same as a standard flagship smartphone.

While the magnetic mount is different, the module installation method is very similar to that used in Project Ara. Google used a frame with sliding and contact-type connectors in the prototype, allowing for the replacement of any component, from the integrated processor to the camera module, and more.

Tecno’s concept phone offers a completely different level of modularity. Its magnetic mounts effectively “pair” with the base phone, using Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and mmWave to connect the added modules. In other words, the user is adding accessories rather than core functionality.

Tecno is currently showing around ten different modules within the concept. These include an action camera, a telephoto lens, a gamepad, and some sort of offline communication module.
