It’s generally accepted that various “smart devices” are designed to make life easier, but some can be useful to those around you even after your death. In an unexpected collaboration with Liquid Death, the streaming service Spotify unveiled a funeral urn with a built-in smart speaker and a “perpetual” playlist.
The product is called the “Eternal Playlist Urn.” It looks like something you’d typically place on a mantelpiece, except it’s not meant to hold ashes. Instead, it’s a collectible speaker with a built-in Bluetooth system hidden in the lid.
Spotify says only 150 of these devices will be sold in the US, each priced at $495.
According to Spotify, this is “the world’s first urn speaker capable of streaming music.” In a blog post announcing the collaboration, Spotify wrote, “Life needs music. And the afterlife needs music, too.”
Users can create what Spotify calls an “Eternal Playlist.” Users answer questions like, “What’s your eternal mood?” or “What’s your favorite ghostly noise?” Based on these answers—as well as your listening history—Spotify generates a custom playlist that can sync directly to the speaker.
This isn’t the first time Spotify has collaborated with music playback device manufacturers. However, previous collaborations weren’t quite as outlandish. In 2022, Ikea released a table lamp with a built-in speaker that supported Spotify services, while a car multimedia device wasn’t particularly popular and was soon discontinued.
