«Super Mario Bros.» Became The Highest-Grossing Video Game Adaptation In Just 5 Days

Super Mario Bros made an impressive start at the box office after its release on Wednesday.  According to The Hollywood Reporter, in the US, the video game adaptation of Illumination and Universal for Nintendo is set to open in five days with a whopping $195 million.

That figure includes a planned $137 million for the three-day weekend, surpassing Finding Dory’s $135.1 million for the second-best animated film opening of all time at the US box office behind The Incredibles 2.

At the global box office, Super Mario Bros. has earned $377 million so far. This is well above forecasts, and enough to make it the most successful animated film in its debut week.

It’s also a good start for getting into the overall list of highest-grossing animated films. Admittedly, that’s a pretty far cry from the impressive $1,657,713,459 that The Lion King remake made, but it’s incredibly likely to rank high on the list with such a promising start.

Surprisingly, the film has yet to premiere in Japan. Super Mario is set to release in that region on April 28, which will likely give it a huge boost as sales drop elsewhere.
