Stitcher To Shut Down On August 29
Stitcher is closing, the company said on Tuesday. It is the latest casualty of the economic downturn that has gripped the technology and entertainment sectors, including the podcasting business.
“The Stitcher app and website will discontinue operations on August 29, 2023,” the company tweeted.
Stitcher is one of the first podcast apps to gain popularity with a range of features that make it easy to find podcasts, get recommendations, and curated lists. The app offered a large podcast library and some extra features in the premium version, including the ability to listen to ad-free podcasts.
The Parent company SiriusXM said it would continue to offer Stitcher content. “Subscribers can listen to podcasts on the SiriusXM app and will see a whole new listening experience later this year,” the post reads.
SiriusXM acquired Stitcher in 2020 from EW Scripps for $325 million. In addition to the podcasting app, Stitcher has monetized and distributed content and created podcasts through Stitcher Studios, which hosts the Let’s Talk Off Camera With Kelly Ripa, Sounds Gay, and Sound Detectives podcasts, and Earwolf, which hosts the popular podcast How Did This Get Made? and more.
