Musk Promises To Open The Source Of The Grok Chatbot

Elon Musk’s startup xAI will open the source code of the chatbot Grok, which competes with ChatGPT. Musk is actively monetizing Grok already at the testing stage, while simultaneously accusing the ChatGPT developers of excessive commercialization.

If xAI publishes the original year of its chatbot Grok, the startup will join a number of companies that have already done so, including Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta Platforms. The French startup Mistral is also among the supporters of opening free access to the source code of its chatbot.

Elon Musk has long been promoting the idea of free access to the developments of his companies. Many of Tesla’s patents have been available for use by anyone since 2014, although in practice it turns out that it will not be possible to use them for free. As noted then, Tesla took this step out of a desire to speed up the transition to electric vehicles.

Grok is currently in beta and is being offered to X users as part of an “early access program.” Participation in this program is available only to subscribers of the X Premium+ plan, which costs $16 per month.
