HBO Cancels ‘Westworld’ After Four Seasons

HBO has announced it is canceling the sci-fi drama after four seasons, with the finale of the latter airing back in August.

HBO said in a statement: “Over the past four seasons, Lisa and Jonah have captivated viewers, raising the bar every step of the way.  We are grateful to the incredibly talented cast, producers and crew, and to all of our partners from Kilter Films, Bad Robot and Warner Bros.

The reasons for the decision are not reported.  Sources of the publication ruled out the economic rationale for the closure of the project – while earlier the CEO of Warner Bros.  Discovery (owns HBO) David Zaslav promised to actively cut costs.

Westworld creators Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy have repeatedly stated that they plan to release five seasons of the series – such statements have been heard since the first episodes were released in 2016.  Nolan and Joy were in talks for a sequel back in early October.

According to THR, the ratings of the series fell sharply in the third season, then the decline continued.  Fans increasingly complained that the show had become entangled in its mythology, lacking characters to empathize with.
