Google Is Shutting Down Hangouts This Uear In Favor Of Google Chat
Back in 2020, Google began work on switching users from Hangouts to Chat, and it was officially announced that Hangouts would die soon. The tech giant has announced that it will officially shut down Google Hangouts this year and is urging people to switch to Google Chat. Here’s what you need to know.
Google said that Hangouts users will now begin to see an in-app notification asking them to go to Google Chat, either in Gmail or the standalone Chat app. Those using the Hangouts for Chrome extension will also receive a notification to switch to the Chat web app or Chat on the web.
In July, Hangouts users in Gmail will automatically migrate to Chat. Online hangouts will continue through this fall. Google Hangouts will cease to exist in November 2022, after which users will no longer be able to use the platform.
The company is committed to further improving Google Chat and will soon introduce additional features for it. This will include direct calling, real-time streaming to Spaces, and the ability to share and view multiple images.
