Figure AI Unveils Second-Generation Humanoid Robot
Figure AI today unveiled its second-generation humanoid robot, Figure 02, which “improves on every element” of its predecessor, Figure 01. The company said it had to completely “redesign” its robot to ensure it could withstand the long cycle of rigorous testing in manufacturing.
The second version “reimagines the hardware and software completely,” with technical advances in AI, computer vision, batteries, electronics, sensors and actuators, the company says.
According to Figure AI, the new robot has a 50% larger battery capacity than Figure 01, allowing it to operate longer in real-world conditions. The battery is integrated into the robot’s body near the center of mass, making it more stable and maneuverable. Specially designed motors are integrated with the robot’s joint drive chains to optimize power and performance.
Figure 02 visited BMW’s Spartanburg plant for training and data collection. The companies entered into a commercial agreement in January, and the robot’s developer demonstrated its effectiveness at the automaker’s facility in June.
