Elon Musk Urged To Suspend The Development Of More Powerful AI Systems
SpaceX, Tesla and Twitter CEO Elon Musk, Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak and 1,100 other professors, engineers and researchers are calling for a halt to artificial intelligence experiments. They are afraid that this may threaten humanity.
Elon Musk and a group of artificial intelligence experts and industry leaders, in an open letter, citing potential risks to society, are calling for a six-month pause in the development of systems more powerful than the recently launched OpenAI GPT-4.
Earlier this month, OpenAI, backed by Microsoft, unveiled the fourth iteration of its AI GPT program, which wowed users with natural conversation, songwriting, and summarizing long documents.
“Powerful AI systems should only be developed when we are confident that their impact will be positive and the risks manageable,” the letter says.
The letter was signed by more than 1,000 people, including Musk. Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, and Sundar Pichai and Satya Nadella, CEOs of Alphabet and Microsoft, did not sign the letter.
Among the signatories of the letter are Stability AI CEO Emad Mostak, researchers at Alphabet-owned company DeepMind, as well as prominent AI experts Yoshua Bengio, often referred to as one of the “godfathers of AI”, and Stuart Russell, one of the first researchers in this field.
