China To Build The World’s Most Powerful Solar Power Plant – 8 GW

China Three Gorges Renewables Group in September 2024 will start the building of a solar power plant with a capacity of eight gigawatts will begin. It will be located in Ordos on a desert plateau in North China in the south of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, about 300 kilometers from Beijing.

To roughly imagine the scale of the new solar power plant, it is enough to know that the three largest solar farms in the world each produce approximately 3 GW. All of them, by the way, are located in China. The new site will be created in the Inner Mongolia region of northern China. It will transmit electricity to consumers via ultra-high voltage lines. This is where superconductivity would be useful, but it doesn’t exist yet.

In addition to the 8 GW solar field itself, the project envisages the creation of a 4 GW wind farm, a 5 GW buffer storage facility, a 200 MW solar thermal energy collection complex and a 4 GW coal-fired power plant. All this will be owned by China Three Gorges Renewables (56% share) and Inner Mongolia Energy Group (44%). The facility will be commissioned by June 2027.
