Apple Comes Up With A Way To Deal With The Crease On iPhone Duo

If you are eyeing the iPhone Duo, the main question likely isn’t about the camera or the processor, but the fold. All foldables have a crease on the inner screen, and it usually becomes more noticeable over time. Yet, no one wants to shell out nearly $2,000 for a smartphone that will look worn-out after just a year. It turns out Apple has a trick up its sleeve for this—something not mentioned at the presentation at all, but revealed by one of the company’s executives.

To ensure the iPhone Duo retains its original appearance for as long as possible, the manufacturer incorporated a unique design feature: a replaceable coating layer on the foldable display.

“The matte display coating does an excellent job of—let’s say—minimizing the crease. But there is another layer on top of it, and we put a significant amount of engineering effort into extending its lifespan and ensuring its maximum effectiveness. It is actually replaceable, which is very convenient for the user—you can remove the layer and apply a new one,” explained Kate Bergeron, Apple’s Vice President of Hardware Engineering.

This “coating layer” is mentioned in the list of estimated AppleCare service costs for the iPhone Duo; with an AppleCare subscription, replacing the coating costs $19. The cost of the service without a subscription is not yet known. This measure is intended to reassure those who feared that the foldable iPhone Duo—priced at over $2,000—would eventually look unsightly.

For customers in the US and Europe with AppleCare+, this really alleviates some concerns. Once every year or year and a half, you can drop by an Apple Store and restore the screen to a near-factory condition.
